Which gemstone is right for me?

Updated: Oct 12, 2022

You might have heard that diamonds are versatile and perfect for everyday. So...does that mean you should stick to diamonds or choose a unique coloured gemstone that speaks to YOU?

With such a great variety of gemstones to choose from, deciding which one is the right stone for you can get overwhelming.

Good news, I'm here to help!

The best way to choose your perfect stone is to ask yourself these 4 Easy Questions:

  • What colours do I love?

  • What colours do I wear?

  • What occasion would I wear this ring / necklace / earrings for?

  • What is my birthstone?

Let's take a closer look at each one to help you decide!

1. What colours do I love?

Check out these gemstone options according to colour.

Blue: sapphire, aquamarine, blue zircon, tanzanite

Green: green sapphire, teal sapphire, emerald, alexandrite, green tourmaline, tsavorite garnet, peridot

Pink: pink sapphire, pink tourmaline, Padparadscha sapphire

Peach: peach sapphire, morganite

Purple: purple sapphire, amethyst, tanzanite

White: white sapphire, diamond, opal

Red: ruby, garnet

Orange: orange sapphire, citrine, spessartite garnet

Yellow: yellow sapphire, citrine

FIY: Sapphires are available in all colours of the rainbow, check out these beauties below!

They are perfect for everyday wear, so can't go wrong there! Just pick a colour that speaks to YOU.

2. What colours do I wear?

Is the majority of your wardrobe colourful or neutral / monochrome?

Depending on whether you are looking to add a pop of colour to your everyday life or keep it simple with a touch of sparkle here is something to think about...

3. What occasion would I wear my ring / necklace / earrings for?

  • Everyday wear (e.g. your favourite jewellery, right hand ring, engagement ring)

  • Occasional wear (e.g a cocktail ring)

  • Specific event (elegant earrings for a wedding)

  • To go with a specific outfit (statement necklace to go with your new dress)

Pro Tip: When it comes to choosing the perfect gemstone, don't forget to consider the stone's durability

A stone's hardness (resistance to scratching) is measured on the Moh's scale out of 10.

Diamonds and sapphires (above) score a 10 and a 9, they are perfect for everyday wear.

The science behind hardness and durability can get a little dull so...

Let's keep it simple!

Great options for everyday wear and engagement rings:

Diamond: 10

Sapphire (in any colour) 9

Ruby: 9

Alexandrite: 8.5

Morganite, Emerald, Aquamarine: 7.5 - 8 (some extra care required)

The Cerelia Ring (pictured above) is a one-of-a-kind ring featuring a striking green sapphire ethically sourced from Montana is available for purchase from our Ready-to-Wear Collection

Great for occasional wear:

Garnet: 6.5 - 7.5

Green / Pink Tourmaline: 7 - 7.5

Quartz (Amethyst, Citrine): 7

Peridot: 6.5 - 7

Blue Zircon: 6 - 7.5

Tanzanite: 6 - 7

Opal: 5 - 6.5

Pro Tip: If you are choosing a stone that is on the softer side, consider choosing it for a pendant or earrings instead of a ring, especially if you are hard on your jewellery

My advice is: don't shy away from selecting a coloured gemstone for your engagement ring just because it is not a diamond or a sapphire, but be more careful while wearing it

For example, I know Morganite tends to get a bad rep when it comes to choosing an engagement ring, but if warn with care, morganite is great for everyday wear.

4. What is my birthstone?

Although you don’t have to stick to a stone assigned to your birthday month, it’s a great place to start when choosing a gemstone for your new piece of jewellery.

Many cultures associate gemstones with birthdays and zodiac signs and have done so for centuries.

In 1912, Jewelers of America came up with a list of 12 gemstones (one for every month) that would be associated with a person’s birth month and known as their “birthstone”.

Since then, some extra gems have been added to the list meaning that some months like December, have two birthstones (blue zircon and tanzanite), lucky!
