Is Morganite a good stone for an engagement ring?

Updated: Sep 30, 2021

Although morganite was discovered over a century ago, it has received the majority of its attention in the last ten years. With its delicate colour and warm overtones, fashionistas and brides-to-be all over the world are choosing this lovely gem for their collection.

With such a great variety of options available for engagement rings, the ultimate questions is: “is morganite a good stone for an engagement ring?”

My answer is YES, it absolutely is. Let’s take a closer look why!

While doing research for one of my previous blog posts on gemstones and their significance Power and Beauty, I read that wearing morganite evokes a sense of peace, joy and inner strength. It quiets stress, relieves pressure and is considered the perfect talisman. Morganite is also said to open the Heart Chakra. What a lovely way to begin a lifetime journey together!

Say yes to a Morganite engagement ring if:

  • you are looking for an unconventional engagement ring

  • you do not see yourself as a “traditional bride”

  • you love gorgeous pastel and peach colours

  • you are looking for an on-trend alternative to a diamond

  • you love rose gold (personally, I am a HUGE fan!)

  • you are looking for a more affordable option than a diamond or a sapphire

  • you would LOVE a stone bigger than 1 carat

  • you love fancy shapes like ovals, pear shapes and cushions

  • you absolutely adore halo style settings

Durability

One of the main concerns when it comes to choosing a morganite engagement rings is the stone’s durability. On the Moh's 10-point Hardness Scale, morganite ranks as a 7.5 to 8 (in comparison to diamonds at 10 and sapphires at 9).

Although Morganite is not as durable as diamond or a sapphire (in any colour) which means it is more prone to scratches or damage, it is still a wonderful, durable choice for an engagement ring. If warn with care, morganite is suitable for everyday wear.

Pro Tip: Choosing a halo style setting can keep your morganite safe and secure

Caring for Morganite

If you are a lucky owner of a morganite ring, it is a good idea to remove it when doing household chores using harsh chemicals or any physical activity to avoid accidental damage. As with any piece of jewellery, it requires regular cleaning to maintain its sparkle and shine, I suggest a soft toothbrush and soapy water.

Whatever the gemstone you choose, I always recommend being careful with your jewellery and avoid wearing it at the gym, the beach or while cooking, cleaning and gardening. Even diamonds can get broken and damaged that way!

Where do I store my morganite ring?

I highly recommend keeping your morganite jewellery separately from other gemstones in your jewellery box, as each gemstone has a different level of hardness.

A diamond or a sapphire in your other jewellery can accidentally scratch a morganite if it is not stored carefully.
