How to choose the perfect gemstone for ME?

With such a great variety of gemstones to choose from, deciding which one is perfect for you can get overwhelming.

Good news, I'm here to help!

The best way to choose your perfect stone is to ask yourself these 4 Easy Questions:

  • What colours do I love?

  • What colours do I wear?

  • What occasion would I wear this ring / necklace / earrings for?

  • What is my birthstone?

Let's take a closer look at each question to help you decide!

1. What colours do I love?

If you are drawn to specific colours, that's a great place to start when choosing the perfect gemstone for you!

Here are some examples to help you get started.

Blue: sapphire, aquamarine, blue zircon, tanzanite

Green: green sapphire, teal sapphire, emerald, alexandrite, green tourmaline, tsavorite garnet, peridot

Pink: pink sapphire, pink tourmaline, Padparadscha sapphire

Peach: peach sapphire, morganite

Purple: purple sapphire, amethyst, tanzanite

White: white sapphire, diamond, opal

Red: ruby, garnet

Orange: orange sapphire, citrine, spessartite garnet

Yellow: yellow sapphire, citrine

They are perfect for everyday wear, so you can't go wrong there!

Just pick a colour that speaks to YOU.

2. What colours do I wear?

Is the majority of your wardrobe colourful and full of prints or neutral / monochrome?

Depending on whether you are looking to add a pop of colour to your everyday life or keep it simple with a touch of sparkle here is something to think about...

For example:

if I'm wearing leopard print and bright red nails I often choose diamond stacking rings to finish off my look

3. What occasion would I wear my ring / necklace / earrings for?

  • Everyday wear (e.g. your favourite jewellery, right hand ring, engagement ring)

  • Occasional wear (e.g a cocktail ring)

  • Specific event (elegant earrings for a wedding)

  • To go with a specific outfit (statement necklace to go with your new dress)

Pro Tip: When it comes to choosing the perfect gemstone, don't forget to consider the stone's durability

If you work a lot with your hands or love baking and gardening I highly recommend choosing a necklace or earrings for everyday wear, instead of a ring

The science behind gemstones' hardness and durability can get a little dull so...

Let's keep it simple!

A stone's hardness (resistance to scratching) is measured on the Moh's scale out of 10.

Diamonds and sapphires score a 10 and a 9, they are top choices for everyday wear.

Great options for everyday wear and engagement rings:

Diamond: 10

Sapphire (in any colour) 9

Ruby: 9

Alexandrite: 8.5

Morganite, Emerald, Aquamarine: 7.5 - 8 (some extra care required)

Great for occasional wear:

Garnet: 6.5 - 7.5

Green / Pink Tourmaline: 7 - 7.5

Quartz (Amethyst, Citrine): 7

Peridot: 6.5 - 7

Blue Zircon: 6 - 7.5

Tanzanite: 6 - 7

Opal: 5 - 6.5

4. What is my birthstone?

Although you don’t have to stick to a stone assigned to your birthday month, it’s a great place to start when choosing a gemstone for your new piece of jewellery.

Many cultures associate gemstones with birthdays and zodiac signs and have done so for centuries.

In 1912, Jewelers of America came up with a list of 12 gemstones (one for every month) that would be associated with a person’s birth month and known as their “birthstone”.

Since then some extra gems have been added to the list meaning that some months like October and December, have two birthstones, lucky you!
