Trend Review - Stacking Bands

Stacking rings, stacking bands or stackers have been popular for a few years now and the trend is continuing into 2021. They are on my must-have list of everyday essentials!

The idea is to layer multiple rings together to create a unique stack that reflects your style and personality. The look can be created by selecting perfectly matching, identical stacking bands or a mixture of colours and designs, depending on what you feel like on that day.

Let’s take a closer look at how to create the perfect hand party!

Fashion or tradition?

The bridal set, which consists of an engagement ring and a wedding band has been around for generations. Modern brides are now also choosing to add another ring to their set to create a three ring stack. These can be two identical bands or completely different rings flanking your engagement ring.

Wedding bands no longer have to be fitted to match your engagement ring perfectly and sit flush together, I have clients who specifically request to have the gap between the two.

Do I need an engagement ring to begin my stack?

Not at all, and the sparkle is not just for your left hand or your ring finger!

Although some prefer to keep their left hand bare, I often wear stacking bands on my left hand, typically on the middle finger and the pinkie. I will also add a couple of stacking bands to my right hand.

Stacking rings featuring natural diamonds, are the perfect way to start your jewellery collection or expand your existing one.

Can I mix and match styles, shapes and metal colours?

Of course!

I do recommend choosing a focal point in your stack. For example, when creating a stack of three rings, I add a pop of colour in the centre by selecting a rose gold ring. I then add a white gold band on each side. The two outside bands can be exactly the same or a little different. The beauty of mixing and matching is that it is totally up to you!

Is there a limit?

The limit does not exist!

The most important thing to consider is your comfort. Choose your rings depending on the size of your hands and the thickness of the stacking bands. Stack them up high, but allow some room for movement, you should still be able to bend your fingers.

I typically choose up to three slim stacking bands or one thick one. I also prefer to stack in odd numbers to create a visual balance.

Are there any rules?

No, and this is why stacking bands have been so popular. They allow you to become your own designer and get creative! The combinations really are endless and unexpected pairings are always welcome.

Personally I like sticking to two colours, for example rose and white gold, but it really just depends on personal preference.

Can I stack on both hands?

Absolutely!

Depending on the look you select for the day, you can choose to adorn just one hand or both. You can make one hand the focal point and keep the other bare. Alternatively, add a single ring to the other hand, for example on your index finger or the pinkie.

For a dramatic look, stack them high on both hands! For a more subtle embellishment, opt for single stacking bands on a couple of fingers.

Horizontal stacking

You do not necessarily have to stack your rings on top of each other. I will often go for a single ring on alternating fingers, for example, index and ring finger or middle finger and pinkie. It really is about achieving a one-of-a-kind combination depending on your mood. Wear alone, double up or mix and match with your other favourites!

Do I need a special occasion to buy or receive a stacking band?

Not really. Although stacking bands make wonderful gifts for milestones such as birthdays, anniversaries and graduations, they can also be purchased

just because”.

Here are some wonderful reasons to treat yourself:

  • Fresh start or a new beginning

  • Celebrating an achievement, big or small

  • Overcoming an obstacle

Stacking bands can be your daily reminder of life’s little victories, each one carrying its own meaning, triggering memories every time you glance at your hands.
