Did you know that Tanzanite is only mined in one place - Tanzania?
This unique gem is fairly new to the gemstone market. It was first identified in 1969 and added to the official birthstone list by the American Gem Trade Association in 2002.
Tanzanite is now one of the two birthstones for December, along with Blue Zircon.
This gorgeous tanzanite below was a gift from my dad that he picked out for me on his trip to Tanzania :)
Tanzanite is a member of the zoisite family
Pure blue and intense violet-blue colours are considered the finest quality
Purple colours, although stunning, are considered less valuable
Tanzanite was considered an affordable alternative to sapphires but has since gained popularity as a striking gem in its own right
Tanzanite was introduced to the world by Tiffany & Co. and was heavily promoted as an exotic stone. It is still one of their most popular stones
Tanzanite is available in a large variety of shapes and sizes making it perfect for large statement pieces such as cocktail rings as well as smaller jewellery items.
Tanzanite is much more affordable than diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and alexandrite.

Approximately 95% of tanzanite on the market is heat treated.
Heat treatment is an industry standard, unheated stones usually show a brownish colour.
Tanzanite is also known for the following traits:
brings the feeling of being “centred”
elevates the mood and removes negative habits
facilitates truthful thinking and communication
can help open your third eye and help with spiritual awakening

In terms of hardness, tanzanite scores a 6 - 7 out of 10 on Moh's scale.
With sapphires and rubies at 9 and diamonds at 10, these can scratch your tanzanite if not stored properly or if they rub against each other.
I wouldn't recommend it for an engagement ring but it makes a great option for "occasional wear" rings and other jewellery such as pendants and earrings.
Pro Tip: don't shy away from adding this unique gemstone to your collection, just be careful while wearing it.
